Just joined, been mucking around with polymer clay as of late, just finding my own way. I've got a couple of examples in my images, or you can look at all my little things at Izile's Oddities ( http://izile.esty.com ). I've also been trying to work out to make a mold out of a dried seahorse I bought in China Town, so far I've tried twice with no success. The second time I used a liquid base release agent, and it just turned into muck. I heard recently about using baby powder or flour as a release agent. Anyone else ever do successful molding with either of those? I'd hate to waste as big a chunk of clay again.

Liquid scupley.

i used the liquid sculpy as a glaze and did nothing for my peices actually dulled them down. I hate reheating because the piece get so delicate when they first come out of the oven. Am i doing something wrong? What the point of using the liquid scuply as a glaze if it looks the same or worse then when you put them in the over. *sigh*. am i doing something wrong?

cracking?

I have been using kato clay and i have been having an issue with my figures that sometimes they crack. most of the time it resets after cooling and the crack is not visialble.
But i have two firgures where the crack while its not big its still visiable. Anyone else have this problem

Interested in a Sawp?

If there is enough interest is anyone interested in a clay swap? We pick a theme, complete the piece, send to one location and that person distributes one piece to everyone.
Let me know, I'll host it. Theme ideas?
I was thinking of a summer theme, maybe a clay covered rock or river stone in a summer theme. What does everyone think?

Im about to enter one of my figures in an art show. i wonder if there will be snobbery. is ploymer clay considered an art or a craft. I think it can be both. What i do i think of as art but not everyone sees it that way.

kato poly clay vs scuply..

Okay i need to know how katos poly clay is to work with compared to scuply can they be mixed together? I love scuply but it sometime is too soft and that makes it difficult to make my firgures.
i like premo but would prefer something i can get locally.

Greg, my faux jade turned out awesome. I varied just a little from your recipe, but you were right on. My Jade looks great. I tried the opal, the way you described. My did not turn out good. I think I must of did something wrong. I am going to keep at it. Love my Jade!

I'm Greg from Jerome Arizona. I've been working with polymer clay for 20 years. I've tried all the brands and now I am settled on Kato poly clay, until the manufacturer discontinues it and puts out something new. I prefer it most because it requires minimal conditioning, great for blending, caning, sculpting.
I just joined the Tribe network couple of days ago and I love it. Cool to be here. There are some pics of my pieces attached to my tag with the dog.

Talk to me about sanding!

I am new with the PC and am already deep in love. I have a big ziplock baggie full of little things I have made (beads / buttons / brooches), so it's time to try the sanding. First of all: Dang, it's expensive, getting four to six grades of wet/dry sandpaper! (I am poor.) (But that didn't stop me from buying a fuschia plastic bucket to sand in.) Second: I sanded a bunch of my little disky things with the 400 paper. I worked really hard, and got the shapes nice and smooth, but now they are actually duller-looking -- more matte -- they seem to actually suck the light in, like a black hole in space. Is that how it goes? Will it change when I sand onwards and upwards?

Third: I sanded a little circle of my thumb away, and also my next-to-little finger. So I had to put it all away for a couple weeks while that healed (and life swept me back into its maelstrom). How do you protect your tender digits? How do you get life to leave you alone so you can concentrate on your hobbies? Fourth: which exact grades of sandpaper do you use, and where do you get them? Sixth: I have also purchased a bottle of Future acrylic floor sealer, but haven't tried it yet. How many of you bother to sand, when you can resort to such a quick shiny substitute?

New to Tribe

Hi, I've just been introduced to Tribe and so far it looks like it's going to be an interesting journey.

I'm what you call a 'serial crafter' I just try it all! I've been 'playing' with polymer clay since I was 7 (so that's about 27 years ago) but only recently have I been really getting into it, making canes and stuff that's probably good enough to sell.

I'm a PMC (precious metal clay) tutor too, so combining the two should be fun, but I've not gone down that road just yet.
Hope to learn and maybe share some ideas in here.

What's on your worktable?

Hi everyone!

It's always fun to know what everyone is working on, so post here and let us know what project or projects you have on your worktable! Pictures are welcome too!

Right now I have a half done woman in a large ziploc bag. I haven't been in a claying mood lately, and didn't want her to get dusty! LOL She is mostly there, except for hands and feet.... and a face. I haven't figured out how I'm going to pose her yet. But she is about 8 inches long. I think one thing that is holding me back is the lack of cloth and doo dad scraps to cloth her with. I'm not a big sewer, so I don't have a bunch of that sort of thing laying around.

Ok, that's what's on my table, now what's on yours??

Oh, btw, I added some new pics on my profile area of things I've made, if anyone cares to look. :-)

Hi Everyone!

Looks like this is a quiet group so far, but I bet that is going to change soon! I sure would love to hear what you all enjoy making with polymer clay! I am going to be adding some pics of things I've made to my photos section soon. My main love is figures. I've done things like fairies and mermaids, "real" people, and even some pretty cute animals! Most of mine have been around the 7 inch range, but I've done at least one fairy that was just under 2 inches.

If you've got pics in your profile, let us know, or even post them here on this tribe!
